Painting a Picture or face or a part of Nature ( even if it is almost perfect) may not be creative ART but only smart Copying or Copy-catting .
Art is , in another way, the creative -spirit of the Soul on a CANVAS or Board where the Artist's inner soul must be added to the copying Visual-s and the added feeling of the Artist must fill up or even over-flow the canvas to involve the viewer unto a new feeling.

A true Creative artist must have as many or more 'Sketches '
in his studio to prove his faith and devotion .

ANS : You know I am a poet first and and first condition of a poet is to be true to Self nd soul, . . . .. . . Yes my family suffers and like most Auto-Biographers wo according to MARK TWAIN are 'great li'ars , I shall not pretend to say that they all happily helped me for that can not be . My wife suffered for I could not comto her help when needed, my children suffered for I could not be with them when they desired. But Maybe , they suffered but yet endured ; for, --I was not doing anything mean but tried to seek a vaster SKY for me and them , all together .
And you know ; this sacrifice and endurance is also another kind of love in family life .
Q: There are a good many abstract Art-pieces while some are quite simple in form and
mood .Can you explain , - how you developed your approach from simple unto this
abstract form ?
Ans : Yes I can . I started my works from simple patterns and then as i evolved more and higher I started to impart sou in my Art -models. And i told you already that unless a piece revealed some inner mood or language , only form -external did never interested me .
Then when ideas and feelings grew more intense , deep or abstract the forms had to leave it's simple pattern and be more complex to be able to hold the meaning within.
The examples are: i) Dev-Daasi ii)EVOLUTION iii) Modern Man iv) Shringer v) Don -quixote vi) Mother- Courage etc .

Q: What is the method for Searching the Material-s ?
Ans : There is no partcularity as I told yoy before. I am a Doctor and in a job ,
I go to the hospital( Safdarjung Hospital , Delhi and try to keep myself really awake or even when else where I keep myself waiting for a surprise if even be a ood piece, IAnd if I find i ock it up hold it turn it around then keep it for futureexamination or throw it.
One this is certain : only form or shape alone does not keep me interested unless there is possibility of some inneror deeper soul-message for communication outside. And when I succeed I feel rewarded knowing that I have succeeded.
Q : what is your idea about giving mid-term -find for givng a final shape ?
Ans .: only by seletion or rejection . One ting is certain I may trimm or shop as many times but I can not any piece to it to fill up the shape I need . If i do then i have no right to keep it as an Art piece as that will violatethe law of this game of my Waste - wood search .
Q Where from yout your first inspiration ?
Ans : I get my inspiration from almost all events o fife .
In hospital in suffering and struggling patients i get inspiration , I get inspiration in dying or falling trees or even in running men sweating
You now ; Life is a very big Canvas and often you cannot be very selective and yet mut keep your eyes and awareness ever sharpened at the tip. Often even the body on the road-side are better 'Model' any kept in sutdio .
Q : Being a doctor, how do youfind time for so many serious Ats ?
Ans : It is a very old questions -- ut up and ever answered in so many different ways ! And I too shall try the same .
Of course Time is 24 hours / Day for everyone ,=. Onlt : you have to select your own mode of living and select and separate out time , sacrificing elsewhere . And I had to give up so many other choices in life for the one-s I love more .
Q : your wife must be feeling jealous and don't your family and children feel neglected ! ?

Q: ( Mrs. Pandey ) : Ha not any sort of formal training at all , Dr. Basu
Ans : To speak very honestly i had none . I in my village schooll ( pathshaalaa) did not draw even a cat or an egg-plant . Later I learnt that all great artist in the end desire and struggle to liberate themselves from the grip and influence of their Master to . to be Free themselves.
I feel glad to say now I think, that I was fortunate not be under any one's influence at any level
Poetry is perhaps the only world of ART where a poet only always creates himself.
Art , like Dancing , music, painting all have ' Traing systems or schools' . And for a real POET there can not be any School or training center, If there is, they but deceiving for mammon gains .
As a poet you are left alone with your inner' EYE ' with your higher conscious State , You 're within yourself and ALONE like the Divine . And there I got my faith of curving wood and Sketch or script my feeling as a sculptor on wood form .
But one thing I admit : it was the drawing and painting of Rabindronaath that inspired me at one stage most to venture and push myself to the daring desire to shape or sculp or go beyond the traditional boundary of form or Features.I mean some lines with the srt pf compression ,distortion, elongation thus exoressing even the infinite witha that limit .
And i think only that should be ART that can over-flow ot's physical space or limitation .

Q: Is it not Escapism tat being a doctor uou try to engage yourself in the Field of Art and
Poetry ?
Ans ; don't know how you-people spell ESCAPISM or extract neaning out of it !! So far I have learnt about the word it means running away from the meaning of real living in a negative field of conscious living .
Here you yourself say that I am a doctor in job , even a specialist , Then i am a family -man with wife and children and neglecting them. Over more , you say I am a Poet and an sculptor too.
Now , to live so intensely and actively and to be in so any channels of living; is it Escapism ? ! If it is so , then let me put it another way :Leonardo Da Vin ci. -- an engineer , an Anatomist , a designer of air plane , a philosopher and --- creator of thAT IMMORTAL "MONA LISA" ! And was he an ESCAPIST ??
Or CHURCHILL , the Lord of Battle field , the prime minister,the winner of NOBEL PRIZE in Literature and eve nore a paiter and brick -layer. was he an ESACAPIST
Or Somarset Maughm ; a Doctor and author of " Of Human Bondage " or even ' Bonoful' a Doctor and a Master --story-teller !
So you see: to be involved in expanded life of higher consciousness is not ESCAPISM.
Hope , you change your stand .

Q : Do find a wood piece of suggesting some sculpture form and preserve it ?
Ans : Not at all .I f i only found them and preserved , i should at most be named an Art -Collector and not a sculptor or Creative Artist.
Well, look at this piece that I named "Modern Man ". This figure or man looks highly intelligent with massive Brain and look so confident , intellectually impressive and dominating . But also largely dis proportionate with a Base and wit no space to represent his SOUL ! This is total Imbalance in modern set up civilization and Life . Thus this intelligent Modern man looks almost like a grotosque figure. So you see this wood -piece could not be a sculpture untill I imparted my feeling unto completeing the shape. And and thus : and here I was the Creative Artist and not an Art Collector searching forms alone .
Q : You are a Poet and now , you are also a Sculptor . Which fied you like to express more to express yourself , Or which side your love lies ?
Ans : You want to expose my weaknesses ! Even though this is my recent love for visual Art , it is always the Poet in me who grew in me and induced me even in other Games of art ,
I started loving and writing poetry since I entered my teen-age ; maybe even earlier.
The situaution was ; I was born in a remote village of 1990s- Bengal and grew as a real village boy . I didi nit see a train until I was 15. and was a champion sufferer from
Malaria moulding me into a very sick boy and rejected in every sport . That helped
me indirectly to grow within as a poet . So poetry perhaps, found easy space in me .
And during my life as a Medical student and as shy rural figure and totally UN-smart , tookk hiding in drawing , sketching along with poetry and was tremendously impressed
and inspired by the drawing Talent of Anatomy Professor Dr . Pashupoti Bose and being inspired I started a Sketch - wall paper . Maybe that led me or pushed me to this Game of Visual Art .
So , poetry and perhaps Sketching inspired by that Amatomy Professor helped me to wards poetic Sketching and led me to the heaps of waste -woof gathered for sale for cooking though out DELHI of the-then -time.
Q : do you think that your being a doctor help you any way in being a artist or sculptor ?
Ans .: I think it deed, from Anatomy & physical state of things in living beings ; the proportion , the disproportion, the normal the abnormal . From physiology I learnt the fuction and dysfunctions of our Inside . From clinical studies I learnt about health , sickness , disease , the agony and pain of a sufferer , the distress and anxiety of relatives and the tragedy after the loss or Death..
Being a Doctor , I think I had the largest scope and experience of the story of living and suffering lives . They were far far better that ART-College Studio 'Model ',

Q ;( Mrs. Pandey) : Do you think any particular type of wood helps you ?
P.B : I have not given much thought to this particularity of pattern or type . To me , durability or quality od wood has not been the main criterion .
I a a poet and try to be creative . Anything beautiful and having creative flow was good enough for me , now . Suppose --the fragrance of a flower. how fragile it is
and yet so beautiful in abstract sense. I wish I could hold it in my hand or frame it for even a while !
Mrs, Pande: You must have travelled far and wide to find these Art - pieces ?
P.B : well , --not much .I did not have much scope nor my porfession allowed it . I was mostly bound in to Delhi by demand of situation and also my profession. Almost 80% of the pieces you see here , wer found in urban Delhi alone .

Q : After you find these wood pieces what methods you apply to put your skill or feeling .
P.B : May I put it in my own way !
I was essentially a Poet first and I neither had schooling or training in the field of Visual Art. But did not feel lost because from my field of Poetry itself I knew the Art giving expression by compression , exclusion and even by distortion of words ,
So as and when I find a piece waste would teasing me with suggestions , I oul cut , assault , even distort it to bring on its surface the hidden expression that I was always finding around ..

INTRODUCTION

From time immemorial woo has been used as a medium of Art. To-day , we have amongst us Dr. Phani Basu who has selected WASTE- wood as his medium of Expression in this field of Visual Art . Phani Basu is unique in the sense that he comnines Science and Art in tha way that , he is a medical Specialist and at the same time a Poet, a Play-wright, a painter , , a writer and now , -- a Waste wood -sculptor
To-day we have quite a few pieces of his Waste- wood with Natural bends and which have been sculpted with creative touch by Phani Basu .

Mrs. M. Pandey ; Dr. Phani Basu , how is it that you took up wood speciallt Waste -wood as media of your artistic expressions ?
Dr. Phani Basu : well that was a situation and a coincidence.
About 20 Yrs. back when I first came to Delhi , I was fed with the idea that Delhi was a Cultural desert nothing subtle really grew here. And as an artist and a Poet I almost experienced it , hard and sharp . So and soon I felt frustrated and lost. And being a poet - (inborn ) I even started suffering from nostalgia and was planning to go back to my root i.e Bengal.
Then one day ,while visiting some tombs and monuments in this Desert-land I saw a thick green and robust CACTUS rising straight defying the hostile summer Sun and trying to assert itself . Almost instantly I regained my faith and I decided to stay and grow here like that CACTUS . I went on searching and searching to know how other trees / plants reacted to this DELHI-Climate '. Thus and this led me to my new Path and discovery i.e finding Life and Expressions in trees even among dead trees or their branches and roots , And soon it was like a Revelation !
